I am very excited about our growing vibrant female community. Over my years in Asheville I have also noticed that the climbing community is growing in general. As more people get comfortable climbing in the gym they are heading outdoors to try their new skills out on the real rock. I think this is great! Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
However we must climb responsibly! As our numbers grow so does our impact on the environment in which we climb. The other day, only a few days after an adopt-a-crag service day I walked down the trail at the central boulders at rumbling bald and saw a diaper of all things in the middle of the trail. I was appalled. I also notice the base of the boulders becoming bear and impacted as well as social trails getting trampled in every which way. Please, if you are going to participate in climbing outdoors, familiarize yourself with Leave No Trace practices and help take care of the environment you are using so that others can appreciate nature as well.
Please take the time to participate in service projects at your local crag, whether that is an adopt-a-crag day, encouraging your buds not to throw their cigarette butts on the ground, or just picking up little bits of trash as you go along. With great privilege comes great responsibility. Climbing is a privilege that we will lose if we do not take care of our climbing areas. Thank you for being a part of a climbing community that has potential to be healthy and sustainable.
